KAREN WHITEROD

Since 1991 I have predominantly worked with nylon. I have been drawn to this material, because I had to discover my own techniques for using it and it's particular qualities. Nylon is translucent, lightweight, flexible and dyes readily.

My original creations were jewellery. The designs are based on "truth to the material" principle. Collars that "wrap" around the neck in various positions due to the flexibility of the nylon. Constructions, which stretch to pass over the head and contract to fit snugly against a neck. Hints of colour or snippets of text, dyed into the nylon.

My personal challenge is always to use a method of joining one material to another or unit to another by a means, which becomes a fundamental part of the overall design. The solutions can lead to interesting visual constructions. Constructions, which, despite the use of a manmade material, ironically convey natural organic forms.

I addition to my own studio practice I lead workshops for children and adults. This complements my own work by using my technical skills and developing my abilities to communicate and stimulate creative ideas in others.
