The road paintings represent places that seem familiar. Glimpses of somewhere once passed through. Perhaps revisited. Or a place that was once familiar but is no longer so. Defamiliarised. We struggle to recall, tomake sense of it, and to represent. They are quiet peices. Contemplative. Elegiac. No irony. Nomonumentalism. Small things.

My work is based on a visual perception of the world. I aim to make images which raise questions both about the way we see and experience things around us, and about our perceptions of the past. Oil paint has a long history. There is a continuity where past and present interrelate. In life, the past influences who we are. Looking back can help clarify issues about the present, while new experiences may lead to changed views of the past. In painting, the past offers up examples which may suggest solutions to present problems. Understanding is not fixed to one perspective. The flexibility of oil paint lends itself to the manipulation of imagery. It allows repeated adjustments. Building up, breaking down, building up. An attempt to arrive at the right form.
